He who thinks that the living entity is the slayer or that he is slain, does not understand. One who is in knowledge knows that the self slays not nor is slain.
Deep Reflection
गहन चिंतन
Krishna challenges the premise of the entire war.
Arjuna is trembling because he thinks: "I, Arjuna, am going to be the killer of Bhishma." Krishna says: "You, Arjuna, know nothing."
He attacks the two foundations of the Ego: 1. The Doer: "I am doing this." 2. The Experiencer: "This is being done to me."
Both are illusions. The Soul neither acts nor is acted upon. It is the silent witness in the center of the storm.
The Great Misunderstanding
"Ubhau tau na vijanito"—Both of them do not know.
Krishna points out two types of ignorant people: 1. The Victors: Who think "I killed him. I am powerful." 2. The Victims: Who think "I was killed. I am dead."
Both are trapped in the illusion of the body. One identifies with the hand that holds the sword, the other identifies with the chest that receives the blow. Neither identifies with the Consciousness that is watching the event.
The Soul is Actionless
"Nayam hanti"—This Soul does not kill.
How can Krishna say this to a warrior mid-battle? Think of the Sun. The Sun shines. Under its light, a saint prays, and a thief steals. Is the Sun responsible for the prayer? No. Is the Sun responsible for the theft? No.
The Sun just provides the light (Existence). The actions belong to the individuals (Nature/Gunas). Similarly, YOU (the Soul) just provide the light of Awareness. The mind and body do the killing or the dying.
The Dream Murder
If you dream that you are a soldier and you shoot an enemy, do you wake up with blood on your hands? Do the police come to your bed to arrest you?
No. Because the "You" in the bed never actually touched the "Enemy" in the dream. The dream-gun and the dream-bullet were made of thought, not matter.
Krishna is saying: Waking life is just a denser dream. The Soul (You) never actually touches the world.
Liberation from Guilt
This is the ultimate therapy for guilt. Guilt comes from the thought: "I did a bad thing." Liberation comes from the realization: "I—The Self—cannot do anything."
This doesn't mean you can go around murdering people for fun. It means that when you perform your Duty (Dharma)—even if that duty is harsh, like a judge sentencing a criminal or a soldier protecting a border—you incur no sin. Sin only sticks to the Ego. It cannot touch the Self.
The Actor on Stage
Consider an actor playing Macbeth. He stabs King Duncan every night on stage. Does the actor feel guilty? No. Does the police arrest him? No. Does the audience hate him personally? No.
Why? Because everyone knows it is a Role. The actor "kills," but he knows "I am not the killer."
Krishna wants Arjuna to fight this war like an actor. Play the role of the Warrior perfectly, strike with precision, but know inside: "I am just playing my part."
What This Means for You
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान
Guilt Management. We burden ourselves with "I hurt him" or "I failed." Krishna says: You are not that powerful. You are a witness to the unfolding of Karma. The waves rise and fall; the Ocean just is.
Victimhood. "They destroyed me." No. They damaged your circumstances, your finances, or your body. They never touched You.
Detach from the Drama. Step back. Watch your life like a movie. When you stop trying to "direct" every scene, you can finally enjoy the show.
Live With It

The Movie Set.
You are an actor on a movie set. The director yells "Action!"
The scene requires you to fight a villain. You have to scream, punch, and eventually "kill" him.
You throw the punch with 100% intensity. You scream with real rage. The sweat is real. The adrenaline is real.
But in the back of your mind, you know: "I am not killing anyone. This is a script."
In your life, you sometimes have to be the villain. You have to fire someone. You have to break up with someone. You have to say "No" to a needy friend.
You feel the guilt rising. "I am hurting them."
Krishna says: No. You are playing the role. The script (Karma) required that relationship to end. You were just the actor cast to deliver the line.
Perform the action perfectly. Be clear. Be firm. But don't carry the blood off the set. Once the scene is cut, wash off the makeup and go home to your Self. You touched no one.
A Question to Sit With
चिंतन के लिए प्रश्न
"Are you carrying the guilt of something you "did," or the trauma of something done "to" you? Can you see yourself as the Screen?"
