The Verse
श्लोक

English
For the soul there is never birth nor death. Nor, having once been, does he ever cease to be. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
Deep Reflection
गहन चिंतन
This is the Anthem of the Soul.
If you memorize one verse about the nature of the Self, let it be this one. Krishna pours out a cascade of adjectives to describe the Real You, smashing the concept of death once and for all.
"Na jayate mriyate va kadacin" (It is never born, nor does it ever die at any time.)
He strips away the timeline. We think life is a line: Birth —> Life —> Death. Krishna says: The Soul is not on the line. It is the page upon which the line is drawn.
The Six Modifications (Shad-Vikara)
Vedanta identifies six changes that all "Matter" must go through: 1. Existence (Asti) 2. Birth (Jayate) 3. Growth (Vardhate) 4. Transformation (Viparinamate) 5. Decay (Apakshiyate) 6. Death (Vinashyati)
Krishna explicitly negates these for the Soul. The Soul does not get born. It does not grow up. It does not get middle-aged. It does not get dementia. It does not die. Only the Body does these things.
Aja: The Unborn
"Ajo"—Unborn.
Why is this important? Because everything that is born must die. A star is born; it must die. A car is manufactured; it must be scrapped. An idea is conceived; it must be forgotten.
If the Soul were "created" at birth, it would have an expiration date. Krishna asserts: You were never born. You exist before the body, in the body, and after the body.
Purana: The Ancient New
"Purano"—Primeval or Ancient. But it is not "old" like a crumbling ruin. It is "old" like the Sky.
The Sky has seen dinosaurs, ice ages, and civilizations rise and fall. But does the Sky look "old" today? Does it have wrinkles? No. It is as fresh this morning as it was a billion years ago.
You are "Purana"—Ancient, yet forever fresh. The fatigue you feel is mental fatigue, not spiritual fatigue.
Na Hanyate (Not Killed)
"Na hanyate hanyamane sharire" (It is not killed when the body is slain.)
This is the specific instruction for the battlefield. You will see bodies falling. You will see heads rolling. But do not be confused. The Container is breaking. The Content is untouched.
When a pot breaks, the space inside doesn't scream. It just becomes the space outside.
The Time-Transcending Self
"Nayam bhutva bhavita va na bhuyah" (It has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being.)
This is a complex grammatical construction meaning: The Soul is outside of Time. Time is a measurement of change. The Soul doesn't change. Therefore, the Soul is timeless. You don't "have" time. You ARE the observer of time.
What This Means for You
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान
You are not your Age. Your age is just the mileage on the car. The Driver has no age. Stop saying "I am old." The body is old. You are eternal.
Death is a Costume Change. You are not ceasing to exist. You are just stepping off stage to change clothes (as Krishna will explain in Verse 22).
Fearlessness. What is the worst that can happen? The costume gets ruined. The Actor is safe.
Live With It

The Birthday Paradox.
Imagine you are at your 50th birthday party. There are balloons. There is a cake with "50" on it. Everyone is singing "Happy Birthday."
They are celebrating the age of the Costume.
You look at the candles and you feel... like a fraud. Because inside, you don't feel 50. You don't feel 20 either. You just feel like "I."
The person who opened eyes in the crib is the same person looking at the cake. The lens has changed (blurry vision, reading glasses). The view has changed. But the Viewer is identical.
Next time you look in the mirror and hate the wrinkles, realize you are looking at a mask. Wink at the mask. Say: "You are getting old, my friend. But I haven't aged a day."
That is different from "trying to stay young." It is realizing you never were young, and you never will be old. You just Are.
