All purposes served by a small well can at once be served by a great reservoir of water. Similarly, all the purposes of the Vedas can be served to one who knows the purpose behind them.
Deep Reflection
गहन चिंतन
The Well and the Ocean.
Krishna uses a beautiful metaphor to explain the limited value of rituals for an enlightened being. Comparing the Vedas to a small well (Udapane) and Realization to a vast flood (Samplutodake). Once the land is flooded with water, you don't need the well anymore. Once you have the Source, you don't need the manuals.
The Purpose of a Well
A well has specific uses: washing, drinking, irrigating. Rituals have specific uses: getting wealth, removing obstacles, gaining merit. They are functional but LIMITED. You have to go to the well, draw the water, and carry it. It is effort.
The Great Reservoir (Samplutodake)
Imagine a flood. Water is everywhere. You don't need to go to the well. You are surrounded by water. Self-Realization is like the flood. Happiness is no longer a "result" you have to fetch; it is your very nature. You don't need a ritual to get peace; you ARE peace.
Transcending the Rules
This is dangerous but true. A "Brahmana" (Knower of Brahman/Truth) transcends religious rules. He doesn't need to pray at 6 PM. His whole life is a prayer. He doesn't need to fear sin. His nature is pure. The map is useless once you have reached the destination.
Not Disrespect, but Transcendence
Krishna is not trashing the Vedas. A well is very useful for someone who doesn't have the ocean! For the beginner, rituals provide discipline and focus. But for the Master, they are redundant. Don't throw away the ladder while you are climbing. But don't carry it once you are on the roof.
Direct Connection
Why go through a middleman (ritual) when you can talk to the Boss (Self)? Realization removes the intermediaries. It is a direct, immediate, unmediated experience of Reality.
What This Means for You
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान
Don't get stuck in the method. Meditation techniques, chants, and rules are methods. They are the well. The goal is the Water (Peace).
Seek the Source. Don't settle for small gains (a little better job, a little less stress). Seek the Ocean (Total Freedom).
Internalize the external. Eventually, the temple must move inside your heart.

The Sheet Music vs. The Music.
You are learning to play the piano. For the first 5 years, you are obsessed with the "Rules." "Am I sitting straighter?" " Is my finger curved correctly?" "What does this confusing symbol mean?"
You stare at the sheet music like a hawk. If you miss one note, you stop and curse.
You are playing the Instructions, not the Music. It sounds stiff. Robotic. Mechanical. accurately boring.
This is the stage of the "Well" (Udapane). It is useful, but limited.
Then, you watch a Master Jazz pianist. His eyes are closed. He rocks back and forth. He is sweating. He isn't looking at any paper. He is channeling something.
If you stopped him and asked: "Hey, did you just play a C-sharp or a D-flat?" He would look at you confused. "I don't know, man. I just played what the song needed."
Rules, rituals, and scriptures are the Sheet Music. They are absolutely necessary to get you started. They train your clumsy fingers.
But the goal is not to be a "Good Reader." The goal is to be a Musician.
At some point, you have to look up from the book. You have to close your eyes. And you have to just Play.
Don't get stuck worshipping the paper. Worship the Sound.
A Question to Sit With
चिंतन के लिए प्रश्न
"Are you worshipping the tool (the ritual) or the goal (the connection)?"
