Translation

अनुवाद

English

One who is not disturbed in mind even amidst the threefold miseries or elated when there is happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind.

Deep Reflection

गहन चिंतन

The Emotional Firewall.

Krishna continues the definition of the Sthita-Prajna (here called Sthita-Dhih - Steady Intellect). He checks your reaction to the two extremes of life: Dukha (Sorrow) and Sukha (Happiness).

Most people are thermometers: They go up when it's hot (Sukha) and go down when it's cold (Dukha). The Muni (Sage) is a thermostat: He sets his own internal temperature regardless of the weather.

Dukheshu Anudvigna-Manah (Unshaken by Sorrow)

When tragedy hits—death, loss, failure—the ordinary mind becomes "Udvigna" (Agitated/Shaken). It screams "Why me?" It splashes around in the pain. The Sage feels the pain (he is not a robot), but his Mind remains "An-udvigna" (Un-agitated). He accepts the blow without adding the drama.

Sukheshu Vigata-Sprihah (Unaffected by Joy)

This is harder. When you win the lottery or get a promotion, can you stay cool? "Vigata-Sprihah" means "Gone represents thirst." He doesn't thirst for the happiness. He enjoys it if it comes, but doesn't chase it. He doesn't get "high" on success, so he doesn't crash from it either.

Vita-Raga-Bhaya-Krodhah

The Trio of Trap: 1. Raga (Attachment): "I must have this." 2. Bhaya (Fear): "I might lose this." 3. Krodha (Anger): "You took this from me." The Sage destroys the root (Attachment), so Fear and Anger die automatically. You cannot fear losing something you are not attached to.

Muni (The Silent One)

Krishna calls this person a "Muni." It comes from "Mauna" (Silence). It doesn't just mean not speaking. It means the specialized Silence of the Mind. Even in a noisy market, the Muni is in a library.

The Shock Absorber

This verse describes the ultimate shock absorber. Life is a bumpy road. The Sthita-Prajna has a suspension system so advanced that even a crater feels like a pebble.

What This Means for You

व्यावहारिक ज्ञान

Don't celebrate too hard. When you get good news, stay grounded. "This too shall pass."

Don't mourn too long. When you get bad news, stay grounded. "This too shall pass."

Kill the Raga. Identify one thing you are terrified of losing. That fear is your slave-master. Mentally let it go, and watch the fear vanish.

Live With It

The Farmer in a Drought (The Thermostat Mind).

You are a farmer in Maharashtra. You have worked the land for 6 months. You borrowed money for seeds. You sweat blood under the sun.

The rains were supposed to come in June. It is July 15th. The sky is a brutal, empty blue. The seedlings are withering into brown dust.

The Average Reaction (Udvigna): Panic sets in. "I am ruined." You drink alcohol to numb the fear. You scream at your wife. You can't sleep. The event (Drought) has invaded your soul and set it on fire.

The Muni Reaction (Anudvigna): He stands in the middle of the dead field. He bends down and touches the dry, cracking soil. He feels the sorrow of the loss (he is not a robot).

But his Mind remains steady. "This is the reality. The rain failed. My spirit did not."

He doesn't waste one calorie of energy on "Why me?" or "Life is unfair." He immediately pivots to Action. "What next? Can I salvage the fodder? Can I find day-labor work in the city? Do I need to speak to the bank?"

He retains his dignity in the face of disaster. The Drought is outside. The Greenery is inside. That dignity is Yoga.

A Question to Sit With

चिंतन के लिए प्रश्न

"What "Drought" (loss) are you letting destroy your inner peace?"
