The Verse

English
One who is not connected with the Supreme [in Krishna consciousness] can have neither transcendental intelligence nor a steady mind, without which there is no possibility of peace. And how can there be any happiness without peace?
Deep Reflection
गहन चिंतन
The Chain of Misery.
Krishna now gives the reverse logic. He asks a rhetorical question that cuts deep: "Ashantasya kutah sukham?" (For the unpeaceful, where is happiness?)
We keep looking for happiness in "Thrills" (buying things, travel, entertainment) or "Status" (Power, Position). Krishna says: You are looking in the wrong place. Happiness is a byproduct of Peace (Shanti). Peace is a byproduct of Focus (Bhavana). Focus is a byproduct of Discipline (Yukta).
No Discipline = No Happiness. Period.
Ayuktasya (The Disconnected)
"Ayukta" means someone not "Yoked" (disciplined/connected). For such a person, there is no "Buddhi" (Decision making power). They are drift-wood floating in the ocean, pushed by every wave of desire.
No Bhavana (No Contemplation)
Without discipline, you cannot have "Bhavana" (Deep feeling/Meditation). Your mind is too scattered to feel anything deeply. You scroll through abundance, but taste nothing.
No Shanti (No Peace)
If you can't focus (Bhavana), you can't be peaceful. The mind jumps like a monkey. Anxiety is basically an undisciplined mind running 100 mph.
No Sukham (No Happiness)
And if you are anxious (No Shanti), how can you be Happy? You might have pleasure (sensory stimulation), but that is not Happiness (Sukham).
Pleasure is eating a pizza. Happiness is digesting it without heartburn. We have too much Pleasure, too little Happiness.
The Hard Truth
We want the result (Happiness) without the process (Discipline). Krishna says: Impossible. The math doesn't work. Fix the root (Ayukta), and the fruit (Sukham) will come.
What This Means for You
व्यावहारिक ज्ञान
Stop chasing "Fun". Chase Peace. Fun is cheap; Peace is the foundation of real Joy.
Connect the dots. Realize that your lack of happiness is directly linked to your lack of mental discipline.
Build the Foundation. Start with small discipline (Verse 61). That leads to Focus. That leads to Peace. That leads to Happiness.

The Village Sarpanch (Golden Handcuffs).
The Crown of Thorns: You are the Sarpanch (Head) of your village. You won the election by a landslide. You have everything the world promises: - A massive house with a central courtyard. - A new Scorpio car. - People surround you, touching your feet, calling you "Sahib." To the outsider, you are the King. They think, "He must be the happiest man in the district."
The Internal Curse (Ayukta): But your mind is not "Yukta" (Connected/Disciplined). It is a chaotic marketplace. Your phone rings 200 times a day—favors, complaints, threats. Your own brother is suing you for a piece of land. Half the village is plotting your downfall. You lie awake at night, staring at the ceiling fan, worrying about the upcoming government audit. "Did I sign the wrong paper? Will I go to jail?" You suspect your own cook of poisoning your food.
Ashantasya Kutah Sukham? You sit on your "Throne" (Charpai) drinking the purest buffalo milk. But the milk tastes like dust because your cortisol is spiking. You snap at your wife over a missing button. You have high blood pressure, ulcers, and insomnia. You have the "Goods" (Sukham objects), but you don't have the "Digestion" (Shanti).
The Contrast: You look out the window. You see the old temple priest. He owns two sets of clothes. He eats whatever people give him. But right now, he is sleeping soundly on the cool stone floor of the temple. He wakes up and smiles genuinely at a stray dog.
The Verdict: Who is the real King? The man with the Crown and the Chaos? Or the man with Nothing and the Peace? Power without Peace is just a pair of very expensive, very golden handcuffs.
