Translation

अनुवाद

English

As a strong wind sweeps away a boat on the water, even one of the roaming senses on which the mind focuses can carry away a man's intelligence.

Deep Reflection

गहन चिंतन

The Hijacking.

Krishna uses a terrifying analogy here. You are the Captain of a Boat (Intellect). You have a destination. But the Senses are like a Gale Force Wind.

He warns: It doesn't take all the senses to wreck you. "Yan mano'nuvidhīyate" = Whichever one sense the mind follows. Just one open sail is enough for the wind to grab the boat and smash it against the rocks.

One Leak Sinks the Ship

You don't need to be an alcoholic, a gambler, AND a womanizer to fail. You just need ONE weakness.

The wind doesn't ask "Are all the sails up?" It just looks for one loose canvas. If your eyes are disciplined but your tongue is loose -> The wind grabs the tongue. The effect is the same: The boat (Life) goes off course.

Harati Prajnam (Steals the Wisdom)

"Harati" means to steal or hijack. The wind doesn't ask for permission. It just takes the boat.

When a strong desire hits (e.g., Lust or Rage), you don't feel like you are "deciding." You feel hijacked. "I don't know what came over me." It was the Wind.

Ambhasi (On the Water)

Life is the Ocean. It is unstable by nature. We are already fighting the waves (Circumstances). If we add an internal storm (Uncontrolled Senses), we have zero chance.

A disciplined mind is an anchor in a storm. An undisciplined mind is a paper boat in a hurricane.

The Domino Effect

The Eye sees. The Mind follows. The Intellect is dragged behind.

The hierarchy is broken. The servant (Eye) is leading the Master (Intellect). This inversion is the definition of spiritual disaster.

Anuvidhiyate (Constantly Engaged)

It implies a passive follow-ship. The mind "goes along with" the sense. "Oh, you want to look at that? Okay." "Oh, you want to eat that? Okay."

This passivity is deadly. You must actively steer.

What This Means for You

व्यावहारिक ज्ञान

Identify your Gale Force Wind. What is the ONE thing that usually knocks you off course? Is it anger? Food? Phone? Know your enemy.

Drop the Sail. When you feel the wind picking up (Desire rising), don't try to out-sail it. Drop the sail (Disconnect from the sense object).

Don't get cocky. "I have 4 senses under control!" doesn't matter if the 5th one destroys you.

Live With It

The Rehabilitated Gambler (The Leak).

The Setup (The Boat is Sailing): You live in a fertile village in Punjab. Five years ago, you were ruinous. You lost your land, your wife's jewelry, and your self-respect to Teen Patti (Gambling). You swore off it. You hit rock bottom and crawled back up. Now, you are working hard. You bought a second-hand tractor. You are rebuilding your life, brick by brick. Your wife finally trusts you again.

The Trigger (The Wind): It is Diwali night. The air is cool and smells of firecrackers and jasmine. Your old friends are sitting under the courtyard light. The bottle of whiskey is open. The cards are shuffling—that distinct, crisp thwip-thwip sound. The money is on the mat. Purple 100s, orange 500s. They call out: "Oye Paaji! Come on! Just one hand. Just ₹10 for Shagun (luck). It's Diwali! Don't be a saint."

The Hijacking (Harati Prajnam): Your mind (Manas) twitches. "It's just ₹10," the whisper starts. "I am in control now. I am strong. I can stop anytime." Your eyes fixate on the Queen of Hearts. The sensory input (Sight/Sound) hits your brain like a drug.

The Crash: If you sit down, the Wind has already taken the Boat. The moment you touch the cards, your Intellect (Prajna) is thrown overboard. ₹10 becomes ₹100. "I'll win it back," you say. ₹100 becomes ₹10,000. The night blurs into a haze of smoke and panic. By 4 AM, the tractor deed is on the mat. You lose it.

The Lesson: The Senses are not your friends. They are the Wind. You cannot negotiate with a storm. Don't say: "I'll just open the sail a little bit." Walk away. Keep the boat on course. The only way to win this game is not to play.
